Eight weeks is the most common target in the United States, and many states set eight weeks as a legal minimum for selling or transferring a puppy. Some breeds go home later by convention: toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Yorkies, and Maltese often stay with the breeder until ten to twelve weeks because of their size and blood sugar sensitivity.

Buyers have work schedules, flights, and family logistics, so most breeders quote a pickup range of a few days around the target age rather than one fixed date. Planning backwards from a target date
